New music and performance acts for Splore 14-16 February

New music and performance acts for Splore 14-16 February

Media Release - embargoed until 6am Thursday 28 November

A weekend at the beach just keeps getting better with more music, performance and visual artists signed up for an explosive weekend of entertainment. The Splore music and arts festival has rounded off its 2014 programme with a comprehensive line up of classic and new genre-making acts.

Definitely in the old school camp is the New Zealand debut of The Orb (live).

Credited with starting the ambient acid house movement The Orb is including Splore as part of its 25th Anniversary World tour which has so far delivered immersive sets with psychedelic imagery at the fore. Over the last 25 years The Orb has charted one of the most idiosyncratic paths in music, notching up hit singles and albums, sellout shows around the world and a string of collaborations. Their iconic single “Little Fluffy Clouds” is regarded as a stand-out classic in dance music history.

The hilarious Cuban Brothers make a return to Splore along with British rapper Ty and Australia’s pre-eminent funk band, The Bamboos.

Up and coming DJ/producers added to the Splore line up include Stone Throw’s Jonti; UK’s  Om Unit who is heading the “slow/fast” revolution, plus Kutmah, the DJ’s DJ who is fast losing his moniker of “the best DJ you’ve never heard of”.  Also announced are LA DJ/producer Kingdom who fuses grime, crunk and US club, an Aussie/Tokyo stalwart, Jet More.  DJ Tamenpi, P.G. and Luiz Valente from Brazil will present a Latin/Kiwi collaboration showcase with local DJ Bobby Brazuka.

The hot new sound of bass jazz will be debuted with the first performance of Bulletproof and Dutty Ranks Live.

Other local acts and DJ’s added to the Splore line  up include, Funkommunity, Strom Brothers (aka Antix ), Cian, Sam e, Killamanraro, Eno and Dylan C.

The Living Lounge is the performance hub of Splore where alternative music, theatre, circus and dance worlds collide. The Modern Maori Quartet will be one stand out act in the Living Lounge. The creative love child of Prince Tui Teka & Flight of the Concords. These four good looking Maori men are bringing the past into the present singing old and new school classics with a fresh 'golden syrup on fried bread twist'.

Out and about performance is Splore’s surprise and delight package of entertainment. Sausage Circus Bicycle Sound System welcomes you to Lord Curio's pedal-powered travelling street theatre, a mobile interactive entertainment extravaganza that will delight your eyes, tickle your toes and add that mustard to your custard.

Powered by shaman juice and employing curio technology that goes beyond the comprehension of all human reckoning, this wondrous contraption is a multi-functional hub of curiosity combining kenetic sculpture, automata, mysticism and interactive performance, creating a magical world for audiences to inhabit.

The new announced acts join DJ Shadow, Ebony Bones, Ragga Twins, Adam Freeland, Blak Twang, Billions Cobra and Binge Culture – along with 34 visual artist installations on February 14-16 festival at Tapapakanga Park, one hour SE of Auckland.

Unfortunately, due to unexpected family circumstances, previously announced artist, Alice Russell, has postponed her February Australia/NZ tour.
