Two Kiwi Titles Head Off-Shore

Two Kiwi Titles Head Off-Shore

NOVEMBER 29, 2013: The action was intense as three different riders each celebrated a hat-trick of wins at the second and final round of the 2013 national supercross championships at Winton on Thursday evening.

But, when the dust settled at Winton, it was also revealed that two out of four New Zealand title trophies would be heading across the Tasman in the carry-on luggage of Australia riders this season.

Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper (Honda) continued his winning streak to record a second hat-trick on Thursday, adding three more wins to the triple success he savoured at the series opener near Timaru on Sunday and amassing a perfect total of 120 points from his six championship outings in the premier senior Open Class category.

He finished the championship a massive 30 points clear of his nearest threat, Australian Honda rider Sam Duncanson.

The MX2 (250cc) class was a slightly different story with Australian visitor Jay Wilson (Yamaha) scoring three wins to wipe out his deficit after round one and overtake Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter (Suzuki), snatching away the title from the Kiwi hero.

Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke (KTM) kept up the good work in the Junior 250cc class, finishing 1-4-2 in his three races to wrap up the class from hard-charging Winton Honda rider Kyle Hartley.

In the youngest class, the Junior 85cc division, Australian Yamaha ace Sam Noonan scored another hat-trick of wins to go with his triple success from round one, easily eclipsing Havelock North’s Oliver Ayre (Yamaha) in the final analysis.
