Many great artists sing Brel but none match Straker whose passionate interpretations are simply outstanding, with songs from new album Peter Straker’s Brel.

One of those performances that is a real privilege to watch,
and one of the must-see shows of the fringe” *****-
Scotsman

Peter Straker – a commensurate and sensitive performer of extraordinary gravitas and the leading theatrical torch-bearer and interpreter of the English language songbook of Jacques Brel.

"I discovered Brel as a young man and began singing his songs at an early age. His music and lyrics had a profound influence on me. He sang from the soul and possessed the uncanny ability to transfix his audience. His songs remain as powerful today as they were four decades ago and just as relevant.

“From the simple melodies that said so much to the theatrical feel of the lyric, everything about the man was unique to the point that he could be considered as his own aesthetic. His intensity and his singular insight into the universal joys of wine, women and song remain unsurpassed.”

Peter first shot to fame as the character Hud in 1968 in the original production of the notorious, era-defining musical ‘Hair’ – the first to portray nudity on the London stage.

In ‘Measure For Measure’ and ‘Julius Ceasar’ he proved himself an accomplished Shakespearean performer. He has theatre credits as diverse as ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, Ken Hill’s ‘The Original Phantom Of The Opera’, ‘The Wiz’, ‘Piaf’, ‘The Rat Pack’ and ‘Cinderella’

Variously known as the ‘Black Bowie’, Freddie Mercury’s close friend or, on TV, as Devlin in the hit series "Connie” with Stephanie Beacham and as Commander Sharrel in Doctor Who’s "Destiny Of The Daleks”, Peter Straker has enjoyed a four decade career across theatre, film, TV and music. He has, in his music career, been a cast member in Pete Townshend’s stage musical "Tommy” and he has collaborated with the Alan Parsons Project on their album "I Robot” and, most memorably, with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé, on their now legendary "Barcelona” album.
