Creative New Zealand Pacific arts report released

Creative New Zealand has released a report outlining how it will support Pacific arts over the next five years.

The report is the result of a review that involved seeking advice from the Pacific arts community on how Creative New Zealand can best recognise and support the arts of the Pasifika peoples.

The Pacific Arts Report identifies five areas where Creative New Zealand will focus to support the health and vitality of Pacific arts:

• Increasing support for Pacific heritage arts and artists.
•
• Improving our understanding of, and communications about, Pacific arts.
•
• Improving the Creative Communities Scheme’s delivery to Pacific arts.
•
• Helping build and develop the infrastructure for Pacific arts.
•
• Strengthening collaboration with other agencies to promote and support Pacific arts.

“We are committed to our value ‘Mana Pasifika’ which recognises the arts of the Pasifika peoples of New Zealand,” says Pacific Arts Committee Chair Luamanuvao Winnie Laban.

“It was important to us that this review was a collaborative and inclusive process. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who fed into the review.”

Creative New Zealand has agreed an implementation plan outlining when and how to action each of the five areas of focus from January 2014.

Over December 2012 to February 2013 Pasifika artists, art groups and organisations with an interest in Pacific arts were invited to provide feedback on a Pacific arts discussion paper via online questionnaire, email, post or by oral discussion.
