John Butler Trio Live In New Zealand, April 2014

John Butler Trio Live In New Zealand, April 2014

Tuesday 15 April 2014 – The Powerstation, Auckland

John Butler Trio make a welcome return to NZ in April, following the release of their sixth studio album Flesh and Blood, due to drop in early 2014. Recorded in a mere 20 days at their studio 'The Compound' in Fremantle, and once again released on Butler's own label Jarrah Records, it is the follow-up to 2009's acclaimed April Uprising.

Butler describes the new album Flesh and Blood as much more direct than previous studio albums and more akin to the several live albums released by the Trio, including their remarkable set at Red Rocks, Colorado in 2011. He explains: "There's something really exciting about that moment when you're writing a song and it's flowing and you stand back and look at it and hear it and feel like it explains things that you've been trying to explain all your life, or it expresses something that feels universal."

Famously 'discovered' busking in 1996, and influenced by "reggae, hip-hop, rock'n'roll, Sabbath and everything in between", Butler has established himself as an activist for indigenous rights and a tireless supporter of environmental causes and also founded The Seed Fund, which offers grants to up-and-coming musicians and artists.

The Trio are regular visitors to NZ, and Butler makes no bones about his affinity for us, which is no doubt shared by his legion of Kiwi fans: "The first time I went to New Zealand, I turned on the tv and found a 24-hour channel that played reggae and hip hop, and I was instantly convinced that New Zealand was the coolest place on the planet... I describe our music as root, rock and rhythm - and there's [a lot] of roots, which is right up Aotearoa's alley."
