Fatal Necessity Returns as an E-Book

Fatal Necessity Returns as an E-Book

Announcing the return of Peter Adams' Fatal Necessity as an e-book

Fatal Necessity: British Intervention in New Zealand, 1830–1847 remains a key text in Treaty studies, over twenty-five years since first publication by Auckland University Press.

Bridget Williams Books is now making Peter Adams’ work (as originally published) available as an e-book in multiple formats. This release is part of a broader digital publishing strategy, making high-quality New Zealand scholarship available for future generations of students, scholars and general readers.

'I very much welcome the reappearance of Fatal Necessity, thanks to the forward-looking publishing philosophy of Bridget Williams Books', Peter Adams

An award-winning history

Offering a detailed examination of the circumstances leading to British intervention, and hence to the Treaty of Waitangi,Fatal Necessity was awarded the 1978 PEN International first book of non-fiction award.

It is hard to find a flaw in this lucid and acute analysis of the factors and pressures involved in the British takeover of this country ... this clear-headed statement of cause and effect, motive and attitude ... all backed by meticulous and exhaustive research, is a vital contribution to a realistic understanding of our political history and race relations. Philip Temple, PEN International award judge

Dr Adams's argument is almost always cogent and clear. Often he offers insights or formulations which are sure to be repeated for many years. Keith Sinclair, Times Literary Supplement
