Celebrating 15 years of Wellington Heritage
Museum of Wellington City & Sea celebrates 15 years of sharing Wellington’s stories this November. Between noon and 2pm on Thursday 27 November, the Museum marks its 15th birthday with treats, giveaways and birthday cupcakes supplied by the Sweet Bakery & Cakery under the sails on Queens Wharf.
Wellingtonians are invited to join the Museum’s birthday celebrations on November 27 and find out about its exciting plans for the future, which includes the opening of a new exhibition on the top floor.
Brett
Mason, the Director of Museums Wellington says, “The
Museum has achieved a remarkable amount in its first 15
years and we are excited about the future as we look to
build on that with our forthcoming development.
“Next
year, Wellington celebrates 150 years as capital city and we
see the Museum’s development as our gift to the
city.”
The Museum, which was last year named one of the
Top 50 Museums in the world by The Times of London, welcomes
more than 100,000 people through its doors every
year.
The Museum’s journey began in 1892 with the
construction of the city’s Bond Store by leading architect
Frederick de Jersey Clere. Originally used for the export of
goods, the building was later transformed into the Harbour
Masters office. The Wellington Harbour Board Maritime Museum
was opened in 1972, and when the Harbour Board wound-up in
1989, most of the building became gallery space. The
Maritime Museum operated for over 20 years.
On 27
November 1999 - after extensive restoration, conservation
and development - the Maritime Museum re-opened with a new
name and a new purpose. It became the Museum of Wellington
City & Sea with a mission to preserve, present and promote
Wellington’s heritage. The Museum is part of Wellington
Museums Trust.
Please join the Museum on Thursday 27
November in celebrating our past, present and
future.
