Sculpture event raises money for Women’s Refuge

Press Release from Women’s Refuge about Sculpture OnShore

Nov 6th, 2014

Sculpture event raises money for Women’s Refuge

Women’s Refuge hopes a record number of people visit Fort Takapuna Reserve in Devonport during the next 10 days to see hundreds of artworks at the NZ Sculpture OnShore event.

“Every person who attends this amazing event helps Women’s Refuge to provide services to the 20,000 women and children we reach annually,” says Chief Executive Heather Henare.

This is the 10th biennial event to showcase innovative, classic and modern sculptural artworks on the beautiful Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve. In 2012 around 18,000 people attended and Ms Henare hopes that more than 20,000 will attend from Nov 6 – 16th this year. Profits from visitor entrance fees and art purchases go towards Women’s Refuge.

Spokesperson Ms Su Leslie says the event is owned by the Friends of Women’s Refuges Trust, which was set up in 1995 after a small group of North Shore woman thought there was a better way to raise money than shaking collection boxes.

“Their ideas have evolved into this iconic event and over the years more than $1.3m dollars has been raised to help prevent domestic violence, and is now one of the largest sources of private funding for Women’s Refuge in New Zealand,” says Ms Henare.

The exhibition provides a snapshot of contemporary sculpture, including standalone sculptures, domestic and small- scaled works, ephemeral projects, light and sound art works, process art and many site-specific installations. Visit http://www.nzsculptureonshore.co.nz/ for full event information.
