Kiwi entertainers raise awareness of family violence
A night of music, comedy and inspiration for Guardian Angels
New Zealand singer, Malcolm Gordon, will perform songs from his latest album at Family Works’ first Entertaining Angels event on Friday 14 November.
Malcolm’s album, The Cobbler’s Grandson, reached number 10 in the New Zealand Music Charts shortly after release last month. The album features ‘Hey Stranger’, a song specially commissioned by Family Works to raise awareness of family violence.
Entertaining Angels will help raise funds for Family Works services for at-risk children and their families in Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty. The event takes place at St Andrew’s Church, 8 Dee Street, on 14 November, from 7pm to 9pm.
Malcolm wrote ‘Hey Stranger’ for Family Works’ appeal during Angel Month for guardian angels to donate $1 a day to provide social services for children affected by family violence. Family Works faces a funding shortfall of $315,000 in Tauranga.
“It’s not often as a songwriter that you get to do something useful, so I was really thrilled to be able to write a song that is drawing people’s awareness to do something so important,” says Malcolm.
Professional comedian, James Keating, and two local women, Tammy Rose Wiley and Esmeralda Smith, will speak at the event.
The women are looking forward to the opportunity to share their journeys to help at-risk children in their hometown. After completing an eight-week course for women on probation, the pair hope their stories will inspire others turn their lives around.
“It’s been a long, rough road. I was broken down to nothing and I couldn’t continue to watch what I was doing to my daughter. The turning point was on this course,” says Tammy.
Tickets are $15 and include angel mock tails and cupcakes. To purchase tickets, visit www.entertainingangels.org.nz or call 0508 484 253.
