Vincents’ annual exhibition celebrates its artists
Celebrating the achievements of artists at Vincents Art Workshop is the main aim of its Annual Group Exhibition, opening in the First Floor Gallery at St James Theatre in Wellington on Monday 24 November.
The exhibition will include 85 artworks and crafts by 45 artists – from paintings and sketches through to brooches, jewellery and ceramics.
Glen McDonald, Coordinator of Vincents Art Workshop, says the event is eagerly anticipated by the artists. “This exhibition is our major event of the year and we start preparing for it from the beginning of the year.
“The work has been created Throughout the year and the artists really focus on producing their best work.”
More than 250 people attend Vincents Art Workshop over the year, where they develop their skills across a range of genre, including painting, sketching, mosaics, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and textile art.
Suzanne Snively, the Patron of Vincents Art Workshop, says she’s looking forward to attending the opening of this year’s exhibition. “What I most love about this exhibition is the joy and colour that shines through, and the artists’ unique works.
“When people look around the gallery walls, they’ll see a lot of works that would make perfect presents – for Christmas, birthdays or simply to say ‘thank you’.”
Many of the artists will also be at the opening and it’s a great chance to talk to them about their work, Suzanne says.
Set up in 1985, Vincents Art Workshop is the oldest creative space in New Zealand and will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. Its downtown premises include several studios and a gallery. Materials and tuition are provided free of charge, and it fosters a supportive, inclusive environment for anyone who wants to make art.
“Public exhibitions have always been a feature of Vincents,” Glen says. “They’re an important way to celebrate our artists’ achievements and provide them with opportunities to sell their works.”
Vincents Gallery has regular exhibitions throughout the year. Along with the Vincents Annual Group Exhibition in the St James Theatre, there will also be an exhibition, The Summer Group Show, in the Vincents Gallery, opening on 19 November and running over the summer months.
Vincents Annual Group Exhibition opens at 5.30pm in the First Floor Gallery, St James Theatre, Wellington on Monday 24 November. It runs until 10 December. All welcome.
