Students wow judges with Conservation Week images

Five photos have been selected to feature in Horizons Regional Council’s sustainability calendar following a Conservation Week competition which prompted the Region’s students to ‘discover the world where you live’.

Four of the winners were selected by Bruce Watt Photography with the cover shot determined by public votes at Te Manawa in Palmerston North.

Horizons environmental educator Helen Thomas said, “We had a really high calibre of entries this year and I couldn’t help but smile at a number of the shots. There are some pretty talented young photographers out there and some beautiful places to discover”.

Amanda Tait from Fairfield Educare in Levin won the early childhood category with a photo of her friend Tyrell at Jubilee Park. Eden Stroud from Manchester Street School in Feilding took out the Year 1-6 category for her picture of raindrops on a flower.

Annlies Orme from Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School won the Year 7-10 category for her photo of the Manawatu River and Sarah Osborne from Taumarunui High School won the Year 11-13 category for her striking image of a kārearea (New Zealand falcon).

A total of 95 votes were placed at Te Manawa over Conservation Week for the people’s choice category. This was taken out by Jaye Duff-Edwards of Manchester Street School with a stunning picture of a gecko perched on his friend’s shoulder.

All winners will receive a copy of their photo printed on canvas thanks to Bruce Watt photography and feature in Horizons’ 2015 sustainability calendar which will be provided to schools region-wide. This calendar will be split into terms and feature important dates for sustainability and environmental education.

“As seen from the spread of our winners, we had students participate from right across the Region. Conservation Week is a great excuse to get out and view the world around us in a whole new light and we hope these beautiful images will inspire others to do the same,” Mrs Thomas says.

The winning photos will be posted to Horizons Regional Council’s Facebook page, with the calendar distributed to schools for the start of term next year.
