Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship team in Round the Bridges

Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship team set to compete in Round the Bridges

A University of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship team is set to compete in this Sunday’s Round the Bridges.

The team of 10 consists of both sport and creative/ performing arts students. These students receive full fee scholarships to the University of Waikato.

While some will be participating for fun, Tim Stewart (athletics), Louis Wright (cycling), Connor Gyde (athletics and theatre) and Cosette Saville (orienteering) will make up a competitive team of four and test the speed of corporates competing in the 12km Spark Business Hamilton Corporate Challenge.

Tim Stewart says he’s looking forward to the event this Sunday.

“I’ve competed in the event once before in 2012 and I would have done it last year except I was overseas. The event has such a good vibe and is unlike the track meets I usually attend. In athletics we typically don’t do many road races, so Round the Bridges, with the bands playing and the prizegiving afterwards is a cool spectacle to add to the running experience.

“This year will be a bit different with the team element added in. It’s a chance for the Hillary Scholars to get together outside of our regular professional development get togethers throughout the year.

“As far as a result for our team, it will depend on what the competition is from the corporate teams,” Tim says.

Local businesses taking part in the Spark Business Hamilton Corporate Challenge include Beca; Fonterra, New World Rototuna, Affco, SkyCity Hamilton and Farmers.

The team with the lowest combined finish time of the fastest four team members will take home the coveted Corporate Challenge Trophy.

As entries are filling fast, we would recommend anyone wanting to take part to head to registration on Saturday as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
