Mo Money Needed for Men’s Health
Movember is
throwing down the gauntlet and challenging New Zealand’s
Mo Bros and Sistas to see who can raise the most funds for
men’s health this Movember.
Recent fundraising statistics from Movember show that New Zealand has already raised nearly $500,000 and the figure is rising quickly each day. However, there is still a long way to go to beat last year’s total of $1.5million.
“Kiwis are notoriously competitive, be it in sports, culture or politics, so we’re encouraging a little healthy cross-country competition to see who can raise the most funds this Movember,” says Robert Dunne, New Zealand Country Manager, Movember Foundation.
“Collecting donations doesn’t need to be about going out and rattling a bucket for spare change. The most successful Mo Bros and Mo Sistas are those that have thought a little outside the box and approached their fundraising efforts with a little Kiwi ingenuity.”
For those Mo Bros and Mo Sistas not sure how to get the fundraising ball rolling, here are a few tips from the teams topping the leaderboard.
Villa MOria, a team of employees from Villa Maria Estate, is currently in pole position with nearly $7,500 raised. Nick Best, team captain, says the key to their success has been getting everyone, including senior employees, behind the campaign from the get-go to ensure everyone remains engaged and dedicated throughout.
“Fundraising events seem to be something we are good at organising. We have a fundraising haircut event planned for Wednesday night at the Grovetown Tavern, a sausage sizzle this Saturday at the local Marlborough Mitre 10 and a fundraising Pizza sale at the Villa Maria Auckland winery to coincide with the big wine sale this Friday,” says Nick.
“Getting everyone involved has been on the top of the list since we started this journey. We wanted to give everyone at Villa Maria an opportunity to contribute it some way. Villa MOria was not started or driven from anyone in a senior position and it’s great to see these guys getting involved with the team.”
A passionate team of fire fighters, The Flaming Moes 2014, are third on the leaderboard having raised over $5,000. Team captain, Tony Scott, says his favourite way of fundraising is to pay it forward.
“One thing we do is MO-wing for Movember – we all head out and mow someone’s lawn and then have them donate to our Mo Spaces as a token of thanks for the work done. We’ve all got something we can do for our neighbours, and this has allowed us to raise funds and start men’s health conversations with people in our community,” says Tony Scott, New Zealand Fire Service.
The Movember campaign raises both funds and awareness for key men’s health issues of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health, and the funds raised are put towards research and support programmes in these areas.
Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the country (and the world)
have registered online and created Mo Spaces where they can
post growth updates, receive donations and share their
Mo-tivation. To donate to a Mo Space or view live Movember
