WHANGAREI, November, 19, 2014 An exit strategy is described as the means of leaving one's current situation after a predetermined goal has been achieved.

Opening on the 27th of November at NorthTec’s Geoff Wilson gallery, graduate exhibition ‘Exit Strategy’ is the grand finale event for third year students in the Bachelor of Applied Arts degree programme in Whangarei. These emerging artists have whole-heartedly achieved their objectives, and the diversity and quality of the artwork on show is testimony to this.

‘Exit Strategy’ showcases the inquiring minds of ten artists. From cutting edge virtual reality installation to enigmatic interactive works, the fields of photography, printmaking, illustration, sculpture and digital media have been explored. Tutor Murray Gibbs acknowledges: “The works are very clearly linked to the personalities of the makers.” This exhibition is a celebration of the diversity of students who graduate from the Bachelor of Applied Arts programme; their dreams, aspirations and heartfelt personal beliefs.

Recurrent themes running throughout the exhibition include: making connections, mythology, dreams and disturbances. Much of the work is multilayered, ranging
from conversations about Whakapapa and the importance of personal and collective growth through education, to questioning systems of value. Repurposed materials feature strongly in this exhibition, bringing attention to environmental concerns, memories and the experience of wonderment.

Tutor Lindsay Marks describes educating artists as: “Giving them a set of guidelines by which they can run their lives.” Speaking positively of his experience as a NorthTec Applied Arts student, Martinus Sarangapany explains:

“I have literally been flipped upside down. I came here with what I thought I knew, but my ideas on life, and how I should conduct myself have changed.” Similarly, many of the works in ‘Exit Strategy’ pose questions about how we live our lives.

Celebrating the infinite possibilities of the creative mind, ‘Exit Strategy’ holds universal appeal. The exhibition opens on Thursday 27th November at 4pm, and all are welcome to attend. The exhibition runs until 18th December 2014.

The Geoff Wilson Gallery is located at NorthTec’s Whangarei campus, Gate 3, Raumanga Valley road. For further information contact 09 470 3805, visit our facebook page or go to www.northtec.ac.nz
