On Sunday

Saturday 22 November - This week the Waitangi Tribunal released its stage one report on Te Paparahi o te Raki claims, looking at what rangatira may have intended when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi at the Bay of Islands and Hokianga in February 1840. The tribunal found that one thing they definitely didn’t intend was to sign away their authority over their land and peoples. This forced reaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson to respond by saying that didn’t change the fact the Crown now has sovereignty, and Prime Minister John Key told Radio Te Hiku the important thing was the country was settled peacefully, overlooking the fact that by 1845 the British were at war with elements of Ngapuhi over the interpretation of the treaty. This week on Korero Mai Ki Ahau Eruera Morgan talks with Ngapuhi kaumatua Kingi Taurua about the report, as well as the issues around rangatiratanga and kawanatanga.

Sunday 23 November - In the contest for leadership of the Labour Party, former union boss Andrew Little prevailed after a lengthy process that came down to three rounds of preference voting. The first of the challengers to be eliminated was Nanaia Mahuta, but her run raised awareness of the importance of the Maori vote to Labour’s prospects of again forming a government. Eruera Morgan talks with our resident political guruHenare Kingi abot the leadership race, and where Maori stand in the party.
