Hobbit stamps and coins popular around the world
New Zealand Post's Hobbit stamps and coins featuring a real piece of Middle-earth are being snapped up by fans and collectors all over the world.
A piece of the Hobbiton movie set has been incorporated into a stamp and coin issued by New Zealand Post to commemorate the final Hobbit movie – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Tiny pieces of wood from the 'party tree', used in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit motion picture trilogies, are incorporated in the door part of the images.
New Zealand Post's Head of Stamps and Coins Simon Allison said fans and collectors in 68 countries so far had ordered and received stamps and coins from the new issue.
“Kiwis are the keenest buyers so far but the US, the UK, Australia, the Netherlands and Thailand are catching up.
“Fans and collectors from countries as far and wide as Israel, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, Mexico, Papua New Guinea and Bulgaria are also snapping up the special stamps and coins."
Mr Allison said New Zealand Post has had a long association with Sir Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. since issuing the first special collectors' edition stamps and coins in 2001.
“After 13 years and six movies, the tales of Middle-earth are about to come to a close with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
“Weve gone out with this special piece of innovation to give fans a real piece of Middle-earth.”
New Zealand Post issued these official stamps and legal tender commemorative coins from Middle-earth to celebrate the final movie in Sir Peter Jacksons epic trilogy of films The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM).
Well known characters Bilbo, Gandalf the Grey and Bard the Bowman; Elves Tauriel and Thranduil; villains Azog the Defiler and his army of Orcs; and the fire-breathing Dragon Smaug also feature on the official stamps and coins.
