Zealand Next March
“He’s the longest-running rock artist who’s never made a weak record.”
– Rolling Stone
New Zealand are lucky to play host to songwriting genius Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks next year; the man who defined an era of music with his band PAVEMENT will perform in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin from 10 March to 13 March 2015.
As always, the work of Malkmus is consistently and casually brilliant. Wig Out at Jagbags, his sixth studio album, was released earlier this year in January. Indeed, it is no exception to past work; playful, intelligent indie rock/pop music with a lyrical sophistication and depth that is unmatched in modern music.
Malkmus describes the album title as “a smeared aspersion, not profanity, but derived from one..... watered down for the airwaves, or the assembly line”.
Malkmus drew upon a curious and wide range of inspirations; from Germany, Mark Von Schlegell, Rosemarie Trockel, through to inactivity, jamming and “indie guys trying to sound Memphis”. Recorded in an isolated studio in Belgium near Luxembourg, he describes the experience as ‘the cradle of morbid tax relief’.
“We were (are?) pretty psyched with results.”
An effortlessly cool ‘Flying Nun-style’ act, Malkmus and band are reliably excellent across such an extensive body of work; this will be a treat to behold and utterly refreshing in a world where viral things wrongly get all the attention.
In the world of Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, quality and music actually prevail which is great for all of us.
