Strong response to new school’s sports tournament in Hawke’s Bay
The Hawke’s Bay school’s sports calendar has received a major boost with the development of an exciting, new tournament.
The Hastings Sixes is a new event that was launched to schools around New Zealand last month. 42 schools have already shown an interest in attending.
The event is the brainchild of the ex-principal of Frimley School and Hastings District Councillor Malcolm Dixon. He says “The initial interest in the event has been overwhelming. The concept was floated past schools in November and the initial replies indicate over 1000 year six students will take part in the sports tournament next year. The sports to be played include netball, rugby, football, hockey, basketball, swimming, athletics, cross country, canoe polo and this programme will be supplemented with a number of social activities.”
Malcolm Dixon says “The Hastings Sixes is about participation and enjoyment, with the sporting events to be based at facilities all around the region. Schools from all around the North Island have registered their interest in attending, including Warkworth Primary School, Fitzroy Primary School from New Plymouth and Windley School from Porirua.”
“Early indications show that 270 students from outside the region and 900 local students will attend the event. I am delighted with this initial response to the sixes but we do have the facilities and organisational capability of catering for more schools,” Malcolm Dixon says.
The event has been targeted at year 6 students and is scheduled to run from the 7 – 10th September 2015.There is still time for schools to register their interest on hastingssixes.nz
The event is being co-ordinated by Hastings District Council in partnership with Sport Hawkes Bay.
