Silo Park season: January 2015
Silo Park season: January 2015
A
community of good times
Christmas is over, but
Silo Park is humming with summer vibrations, and January is
jam-packed with a flavourful burst of activity from all
corners of this fair city! Movies, markets, and music from
NZ and beyond is just the beginning -- Silo Park has summer
in Auckland covered. Who needs the beach,
anyway?
SILO CINEMA
In the buildup to
high summer, Silo Cinema is back in January with an awesome
lineup of local and international films. The season
kickstarts with action-packed bang on 9 January with the
Aussie hero Crocodile Dundee. The following week on 16
Januaryshowcases the powerful 2014 local drama, Dark Horse.
23 January is a special night for all Aucklanders with the
Mayor’s Movie; this year being cult Kiwi classic Goodbye
Pork Pie! Finally, January rounds off on the 30 with Point
Break, thanks to Royal Caribbean.
SILO
MARKETS
On 11 January, Silo Markets will play
host to a ‘Finders Keepers’ market, celebrating all the
vintage, rockabilly and retro treasures and experiences you
can lay your hands on in this modern era. All about the
thrill of discovering new treasures in old objects, Finders
Keepers is also a chance to share your vintage finds with
other enthusiasts. The market will feature a classic car
display, more than 30 vintage/retro/rockabilly stall holders
(plus an array of other Silo Market vendors), and the
Schwarzkopf caravan for quick vintage inspired
up-do's!
SILO SOCIAL
Silo Social is
the latest weekly free offering in Silo Park. Each Sunday
afternoon, Silo Social introduces Silo Park visitors to a
new dance discipline. From swing, through hip hop and
bollywood to line dancing, local dance tutors bring a
beginner’s lesson to the outdoor space. Watch this space
as the dance cards are announced for 11 and 18 January next
year.
SILO SESSIONS: FRIENDS AND
WHANAU
Friends and Whanau is an existing
platform of musical collaboration in Auckland, headed by the
inimitable DJ Hudge. Silo Markets will bring the flavour of
all of Silo Park’s friends and whanau to a special themed
date on January 24th. With a focus on the art, food and
culture of the Pacific, expect to encounter a full offering
of Māori and Pasifika market vendors serving up a wide
range of wares.
Hudge’s line-up features the iconic British DJ Norman Jay MBE, bringing his rare groove to Silo Park for all to enjoy. They’re joined by local outfit The Turnaround, featuring prominent figures in New Zealand beat music Manuel Bundy, Cian and Submariner.
THE ROOTS
EXHIBITION AT THE GANTRY
This is an exciting
sustainable installation emphasising life and regeneration.
The Roots Creative Entrepeneurs have teamed up with 4,000
school kids from thirteen Auckland schools to create a
massive sculptural installation of recyclable bottles, each
bottle containing a child’s illustration of hope. This
amazing sculpture makes a striking wave formation that you
won’t want to miss. Head down to The Gantry at Silo Park
for an exhibition in January and check it out before it
wraps up at the end of January, when the bottles will be
recycled to become three even green(er) houses. This is an
exciting chance to witness a creative collaboration from
wider Auckland come to life in our Silo Park.
Silo Park and its activations for the public are made possible each year with Waterfront Auckland's dedication to creating a vibrant and accessible waterfront in Auckland City.
The Silo Park programme is helping build a new community within the Wynyard Quarter, which over the next 15 years will continue to evolve as a place to live, work and visit.
Silo Park events for 2015 will take place
