New access system for Te Urewera

New access system for Te Urewera

‘Hunters from throughout NZ and especially the North Island, will welcome the start of the new access system for Te Urewera’ says Don Hammond, Chairman of the NZ Game Animal Council. This follows a moratorium on the issue of new access permits for the land previously known as Te Urewera National Park earlier in the year which caused some concern about what the future held for hunters.

The Game Animal Council have provided input to the new system and are confident that people will be able to enjoy their time in the bush in the same manner as they have in the past.

Don Hammond said “this is the beginning of a new era for this special part of NZ and we are proud to be contributing to its future and to ensuring hunting opportunities are available. We would encourage all hunters to abide by the kawa (conditions) the new access system introduces as they are not difficult and are designed to ensure everyone remains safe, enjoys the experience and respects the environment”.

He notes that the Te Urewera Board have specifically asked for feedback from users of the area so that management and opportunities can improve over time and he encourages people to provide feedback to the Board via the website.

“The Te Urewera Board have worked hard to ensure access is available to all who wish to enjoy time in the bush over the summer period, and to meet their own deadline of a system in place by Christmas”.

Both the Te Urewera Board and the Game Animal Council recognise that this is the beginning of a journey, not the end. Along that journey there are many opportunities to work together and share knowledge for the benefit of the people, the land, the animals and the plants with both parties looking forward to this.
