Whangarei artivism moves to the CBD

Brightly coloured Hundertwasser-styled bollards outside The Bach put Whangarei's Town Basin in the national news last week and this week the #hflash of colour continues with yarn-bombing in a central city street.

Despite many messages of support the bollards were returned to 'council green' after just a few days. In fact, the 'councilisation' of them went even further with council responding to an NZ Herald report that the bollards were also crooked 'because they had done their job too well'. The bollards are now both green and straight.

But the fight for colour in Whangarei continues with the tree outside Hundertwasser HQ having been covertly yarn bombed.

The Hundertwasser HQ is a pop-up shop set up by Prosper Northland Trust to inform residents about the proposed Hundertwasser Maori Wairau Art Centre project and counter mis-information in preparation for the referendum which will be held in Whangarei next March.

The Hundertwasser HQ has also received commendations for the art displayed in the shop. The artwork is by Kamo Intermediate students reflecting Hundertwasser's style and philosophy. The HWMAC proposal includes an educational centre. A number of local educators have expressed support for the Hundertwasser building design and the PNT proposal, including Pompallier Catholic College who signed the 'yes-list' saying: 'Whangarei: dare to dream, dare to differ, give hope and inspiration to our youth."
