The count-down is on for New Zealand’s richest race - $1m Karaka Million – taking place on January 25 at Ellerslie Racecourse.

With an outstanding class of two-year-olds lined up to try their hand in the Karaka Million, there will be fierce competition out as the field closes in just over three weeks.

The Order of Entry is determined by the prizemoney earned leading up to the race and with a field of just 14 horses eligible to run the race, the Order of Entry is starting to take shape.

Leading the Order of Entry is Showboy (NZ) (Showcasing) after taking victory in the Group 2 Golden Homes Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Wellington in early December. Trained by Pukekohe-based Nigel Tiley, he sits on a total stakes of $68,000.

Half-Brother to Emerald Queen at Karaka 2015

O’Reilly five-year-old Emerald Queen (NZ) (O’Reilly) secured her third stakes win on Sunday in the Listed $50,000 “Thank You Coupland’s Bakeries” Timaru Cup (1600m) at South Canterbury Racecourse.

A half-brother by new sire Redwood to Emerald Queen is entered in the 2015 Karaka Premier Sale at Lot 163from Valachi Downs.
Trained by Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong, Emerald Queen began her racing career as a three-year-old, breaking her maiden and claiming her first stakes win simultaneously in her second start in the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes. Her second claim to fame was the Listed Valachi Downs South Island Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes earlier this year.

“That’s more like it as Rosie rode her an absolute treat and she showed her true class today,” commented co-trainer Anna Furlong.

Kiwi’s Sprint to Malaysian Victory

Kiwi-bred galloper Yastrzemski (NZ) (Keeper) starred in the Listed Rgt350,000 Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup (2000m) last night at Penang Turf Club.

The Malaysian-based six-year-old has had 20 starts in his racing career, this being his first stakes victory. He resumed to the racetrack two-months ago under new trainer Frank Maynard after almost 15 months spelling.

Starting from barrier 2 for rider Latif Sofhan, Yastrzemski sat third last before gaining a spot on the rail inside the 1000m. After being eight lengths behind leading horse Money Machine (Testa Rossa) the son of Keeper made up ground when turning for home.

Produced wide in the straight, Yastrzemski stormed to the lead to win strongly by two-lengths over Money Machine in second and Stormy Bruce (My Lad) who finished third.
