Kiwiburn festival fosters local artists
Hunterville – Burning Man, the iconic annual festival in Nevada, has spawned a movement of smaller regional events worldwide based on the event's founding principles of radical self-reliance and participation. Kiwiburn, the New Zealand Regional Burning Man event, is in its second year in Hunterville and 12th year overall. We’re expecting over 1,000 participants from New Zealand and around the world to gather to create art and music and help spread the burner culture.
Kiwiburn’s uniqueness fosters creativity enabling new artists to emerge each year from the festival. These artists are working hard on engaging art projects for the event and their art will shine in the setting of beautiful rolling farmland, flowing river and verdant forest.
A portion of ticket sales goes into funding artists to make art for the event, and this year $8000 has been made available for a wide range of projects.
This year's art theme is WYRD – an Anglo Saxon and Norse word meaning everything in the universe is connected by a weave of intricate strands – and is the basis for the art people create for the event, as well as the ‘Man' itself.
We’ll have a UV chillout space called the Grove Theatre as well as high-tech LED art installations from local and overseas artists. One of these, He.Arts, allows participants to control LED art with iPad controls. There will be quirky art cars including a flaming tea cup roaming the paddock, and large scale installations like the Room of Doom – an interactive 3D rotating space. And of course fire will be in full effect every night with the long-standing fire camp, Balrogs Playpen. http://kiwiburn.com/art-installation-register
