WELCOME TO HIGH SUMMER AT SILO PARK

We’ve had a brilliant couple of months of events, activities, films and markets at Silo Park so far this summer. The programme is heating up as fast as the February sun with an even more diverse array of Silo Cinema showings, special themed Silo Markets, music and DJs at Silo Sessions, and hands-on Sunday activities with Silo Socials. Add to the mix a few surprises, and you’ve got a fresh cocktail of summer fun for families and friends of Auckland and beyond.

SUNDOWN FILMS AT SILO CINEMA EVERY FRIDAY IN FEBRUARY

Auckland’s free outdoor movie experience, Silo Cinema, is back for another month of Friday evening films for the whole neighbourhood. The programme kicks off on Waitangi Day (6 February) with the heartfelt local drama filmed in South Auckland Mt. Zion, starring Stan Walker and the inimitable Temuera Morrison. The following weekend Silo Cinema has a special double-barrel showing, with the sweetest transvestites around coming to life on Friday 13th with the Rocky Horror Picture Show, in conjunction with the Auckland Pride Festival. Then, love is in the air come Valentine’s Day (14 February), with a romantic comedy all about the power of “twue wove”, The Princess Bride. The following week, 20 February, Silo Park takes on Fringe Festival for a showing of one of last year’s Film Festival favourites - Pulp: A film about Life, Death & Supermarkets, made by New Zealander Florian Habicht. February is rounded off by the contemporary update on a literary classic, The Great Gatsby, in association with Heart of the City: 10 Days of Fashion in the City. The Silo Markets will be pumping as usual throughout the Silo Cinema screenings, so grab a bite to eat and park up for a few hours of seaside entertainment.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE: SILO PARK BIKE MARKET

Silo Markets are all about bringing together niche communities to share their goods and skills with wider Auckland. On Sunday 1 February in celebration of Bike Month, Silo Park plays host to a Bike Market to celebrate all aspects of bikes and bike culture. From accessories and apparel, to maintenance and equipment, retailers from all over the city are taking part. A celebration of what it means to be a cyclist, there’s a bunch of entertainment, workshops, displays and children’s activities throughout the day to support existing cyclists and encourage interested members of the community to give cycling a go - they’ll even be taking over our Silo Social dance floor! Auckland Transport will be on the ground supporting the two-wheeled community with workshops, repairs and information. The city's bike retailers will fill the Silo Markets.

SECOND LIFE: SILO PARK UPCYCLED MARKET

On Sunday 8 February Silo Markets will host an Upcycled Market to celebrate all things sustainable, repurposed, recycled and upcycled. Silo Park believes in the importance of sustainable practices, and this is a chance to check out our hand-picked range of innovative, creative and impact-conscious experiences and products from around Auckland. Confirmed vendors include design company Critical Pixels, apparel retailers Eco Guardian, Helen Kerrigan and Karkt (who make awesome bags from recycled billboards!), Oboe, Kool Hawaii, Re:Collect, Re:Generate and Urban Nomad. You’ll be blown away by the resourcefulness of these tidiest of kiwis.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: SILO PARK VALENTINE’S DAY MARKET

Come Saturday 14th February, Silo Park will be aflutter with tokens of affection and everything needed to win and woo the hearts of those around you. But it’s not just for dates and romance - this is a fun night out celebrating love in all its forms. This special edition of Silo Markets will run into the early evening, before it is transformed into a magical market dining experience. It gets better - grab a meal and enjoy a one-off Saturday screening at the Silo Cinema, with a romantic tale for all ages, The Princess Bride.

BOOKS ARE BACK: SILO PARK READERS AND WRITERS MARKET

The Readers and Writers Market on 21 February will bring together stalls showcasing the unique creative output of Auckland’s literary world, with old books and new, magazines, zines, stationery and accessories to celebrate unique products. There’ll be a pop-up stall from the ever-popular Zine Fest, as well as contributions from Auckland Libraries, not to mention a whole raft of awesome workshops throughout the afternoon.

SUMMERTIME SKILLS: SILO SOCIAL

There’s a timetable of exciting stuff coming up for Silo Social, every Sunday at Silo Park. As always, the Silo Social is about friendly fun, and spectators are as welcome as participants. Sunday 1 February sees Auckland Transport take over our ‘dance-floor’ for the Bike Market, replacing the usual toe-tapping action with a chance to learn cycle skills for the road. The following week (8 February) sees community dance/music/art company The Breaks NZ hosting Silo Social for a funky hip-hop inspired dance workshop B-boy/B-girl.

Sunday 15th February sees the return of Dance Pasión to Silo Social - presenting their accessible and friendly brand of tango. An Auckland-based dance company, their emphasis is on retaining authentic movements and feeling for each dance style while still allowing the individual dance forms to evolve. Finishing off the Silo Social on Sunday 22 February is the spectacular Bollywood dance teachings of Aaja Nachle. Auckland's premier Bollywood dance school, the studio is known for quality teaching, fun and innovative choreography.

SILO SESSIONS AND WEIRD TOGETHER PRESENT: WORLD TOGETHER, THANKS TO L&P

Saturday 28 February rounds off an awesome February programme with an eclectic and inspiring lineup of DJs and musicians from around the world with Silo Sessions and Weird Together: World Together, thanks to L&P. Once a basement blog, Awesome Tapes From Africa (USA) brings the website’s awesomely curated collection of underrated African music to the live stage. Esteemed Melbourne DJ Lewis CanCut is here to get the people moving with his clean cut, ice-block blend of world beats, percussive house and tropical disco. Courtesy (Denmark) is one of the freshest names on the Copenhagen DJ set, and was present at the Red Bull Academy 2014, along with Auckland’s own Chelsea Jade, who will also be performing her crystalline, textured twist on dream pop. Weird Together’s live incarnation will also be bring the beats, as will Fat Freddy’s Drop heavyweight selectors Slave & Hohepa. This is music, culture and history from around the globe as Silo Park hasn’t seen before -- you won’t want to miss it.
