Movie themes to light up Sparks

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will be playing themes from the big screen at Sparks on 31 January.

Sparks is a free Christchurch City Council SummerTimes event at North Hagley Park.

Council Events Production Team Manager Chloe Dear says music will include a mixture from Harry Potter to the Godfather, so there will be something for everyone.

"Even for people who are not familiar with the movies, the music is still amazing and there's an exciting fireworks display to conclude the show," Dear says.

"Pre-show entertainment starts at 6.30pm with the Justice Brass Band, Christchurch Youth Orchestra and Japanese drumming group Takumi, so people can take their time to get settled with a picnic," she says.

"The youth orchestra is made up of some of Christchurch's best musicians between the ages of 16 and 25 and Takumi will really get your heart pounding."

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will take the stage, under the baton of conductor Kenneth Young, at 7.30pm.

Wagner's Ride of the Volkyries, which gained worldwide recognition when used in the movie Apocalypse Now, Rossini's William Tell Overture which has accompanied The Lone Ranger, Toy Story and Clockwork Orange, John Barry's James Bond themes, and Roger and Hammerstein's suite from the Sound of Music are all included in the programme.

The fireworks will go off to the Superman theme.

Donations will be collected at the event for the St John Ambulance Service.

"Sparks is a popular event which always draws a large crowd, so come early to get a good spot," Dear says.

Parking is $3 at Carlton Mill corner, entry off Harper Ave, or catch a bus to avoid the parking hassles.

If the weather is wet, the event will be held on Sunday 1 February. Checkwww.summertimes.co.nz for a decision.
