The Kaleidoscope World Series is known for its unusual and surprising lineups – but this is probably the most surprising yet.
With King Missile IV in town for the first time ever, what better way to spend a Friday night than to catch a short set from them – consider it a tour “bonus” – alongside an excellent variety of other acts from Auckland, New Zealand, Dunedin and the USA. In fact, 4 out of the 10 acts playing in this West Auckland mini-festival are from the US – with others travelling from Wellington and Dunedin to add to the all-round experience.
Friday the 13th at UFO also marks the release of a well-rounded compilation featuring all the artists playing – AND to cap off the festival vibe, entry is only $20 and includes a CD featuring every band on the bill.
Our international guests are multi-faceted performers indeed. King Missile – poet/musician/lawyer John S. Hall, backed by Azalia Snail and Dan West – will do a short set as a postscript to their full show at the Kings Arms the night before (February12th). And as John’s band members are seasoned performers and songwriters in their own right, both Azalia and Dan will do individual sets. This is the only All Ages show that the King Missile IV band will be playing on their New Zealand tour.
Azalia Snail has recorded 11 critically-acclaimed albums, and is recognized as a pioneering force in the "lo-fi" movement of the 1990's. Many influential labels have released her music, includingSub Pop and Dark Beloved Cloud, who launched their label with a split 7” by Azalia Snail andSebadoh. She has toured consistently throughout the USA and Europe with such acts as Low, Sebadoh, The Black Heart Procession, Sportsguitar, and Illyah Kuryahkin. In 2000 Snail won the LA Weekly Music Award for Best New Genre; and regularly writes music for soundtracks.
Multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and composer Dan West made his name in a scene known as The Paisley Underground (best known for The Bangles; Mazzy Star also had ties to the genre, andPrince named his label Paisley Park Records after the movement). He has also performed on stage and on record with a huge array of artists, and been a bandleader himself. He scored the music for the upcoming documentary ‘Mr. Movie Poster’ about the life of artist Paul Crifo. http://www.mistermovieposter.com/about.html Dan's solo album 'Hot Corners' was released last summer on New Zealand-based label Powertool Records, and his new album ‘Does It Suit You’ is just about to be released.
In addition, West Coast boy Dan West and East Coast girl Azalia Snail will be performing their"deliciously chewy" soulful pop as the duo LoveyDove – who are just about to release their debut album.
On the domestic front, Simon McLaren's Psychic Maps are paying a special visit from Dunedin to perform alongside King Missile IV. Fans of McLaren's will be pleased to hear that while at UFO, he's also working on new material with his previous highly-acclaimed band Sleepers' Union. Hear Psychic Maps on Bandcamp.
Gold Medal Famous will be making their way from Wellington to Auckland especially to play the show, as a stopover before they play Woodcock Festival on Saturday 14th. They have just recorded a batch of exciting new tunes, which they’ll unleash along with their live favourites – including tracks from their EP ‘Free Body Culture’, which was named as one of the best releases of 2014 by music blog Porky Prime Cuts.
The Doubtful Sounds have just released their second studio album ‘A Stone’s Throw From Happiness’. It’s a step up from their very well-received debut ‘The Pop Album’, in quality andsound – and a more challenging set of songs. It starts off recognising its pop roots (Fell in Love) before rebalancing that with a heavier side of life, especially with Mayday (to be released as a single in late November), before delving into alt country and acoustic darkness (Well of the Saints) as the album closes. Listen to The Doubtful Sounds' new album 'A Stone's Throw From Happiness' here – and catch them cutting great pop shapes live at UFO.
Jackal are a young band who have already released four albums, with a fifth due this year. They have a passionate live following; they were included on an international compilation last year – Progstravaganza – and have just released their new single, The Funny Side, one of their live favourites. Check it out on theaudience.co.nz.
Special Gravity is the latest project from Kelly Michael (formerly of Enshrine). It also featuresCarl on bass, who has also played with Bressa Creeting Cake.
And THE hottest new band on the Auckland block (and we are not just saying that) - Mucus Kids.
