Warhol Factory Ubu Night

Monday, 9 February 2015

Media Release

Free Theatre Christchurch presents:

Warhol Factory Ubu Night

Free Theatre’s first Ubu Night for 2015 is inspired by Andy Warhol and his extraordinary Factory. Expect the Superstars to come out for this exciting night: Velvet Underground with Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Viva, Jim Morrison and Warhol himself. Free Theatre explores what made The Factory such a hotbed of creativity and invention, as the company develops the most exciting new space for contemporary performance in Christchurch – The Gym at The Arts Centre.

Ubu Nights are a series of weekly entertainments (combining theatre, music, film and hospitality) that engage diverse communities in interactive and sensory experiences. Free Theatre collaborates on these Ubu Nights with Christchurch artists from different disciplines. The unique experience of contemporary performance is quite unlike anything on offer in Christchurch and is proving very popular with Neat Places describing Ubu Nights as “our new favourite thing to do on Friday nights”. Following the wonderfully successful debut of Ubu Nights late last year, these events provide hospitality with theatrical and musical performances.

As the first arts-practice space in The Arts Centre, The Gym is fast earning a reputation as a central creative force in Christchurch’s ongoing rejuvenation. Free Theatre has successfully launched a daring New Works Programme in the space that will continue this year and include ongoing Ubu Nights, a dynamic new event called Te Puna Toi that fosters intercultural contemporary performance and an exciting interdisciplinary collaboration with international composer Gao Ping and renowned conductor Hamish McKeich. In between Ubu Nights on Fridays, The Gym Bar will still open.
