Workshops by Ron Te Kawa: Decolonize Your Wardrobe
NZ Academy of Fine Arts presents workshops by Ron Te Kawa
Decolonize Your Wardrobe
Workshops on
Saturday 21 February (and Sunday subject to demand) with Ron
Te Kawa at the New Zealand Academy of Fine
Arts
The current exhibition ‘Signing’
commemorates 175 years since the signing of Te Tiriti o
Waitangi. Supporting this exhibition we are pleased to offer
workshops by prolific New Zealand artist, fabric designer
and quilter, Ron Te Kawa.
Ron has worked extensively in the New Zealand and international fashion industry. His clothing has a signature style consisting of using mostly recycled materials, screen printing techniques and bold colour among many other things. He also hand makes elaborate quilts (two of his quilts are on display in ‘Signing’). His works are about storytelling and wearing your whakapapa, creating individual pieces with a bit of brightness and joy to the community.
What will you
get?
These workshops give you an opportunity to
rework your wardrobe. You’ll need to bring clothes to
update, or if you have loose material bring that too to make
patches to add to your clothes. Everyone will produce at
least 2 prints and you can also share prints, so bring
plenty of clothes or textile to use. Please steer clear of
black as it’s a bit tricky for beginners. Also if you have
a special design or a personal image you’d like to work
with please bring that along too.
Ron will bring printing and stenciling equipment and inks. He also has lots of designs including a new range put together by Artist Alison Mclean for Matariki as well as his own designs.
Key details are:
Each workshop is limited to 6 to 8 people and runs for
about 3 ½ hours.
There are two workshops on Saturday 21
February 9 am – 12:30 pm and 1 pm – 4.30 pm
Depending on demand further workshops can be
scheduled for Sunday 22 February.
Workshops
cost $75 per head.
There is flexibility to extend the
length of each workshop to ensure you complete your
project.
