Oceania Badminton Championships – Day Two Review

The hometown boys are dominating the Junior Boys singles at the X-TRM Oceania Badminton Championships at the Norbour Harbour Badminton Centre, with 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists from New Zealand.

Leading the charge is Oscar Guo (NH), who defeated the top seed from Australia in two straight forward games. Oscar won triple titles at the NZ u15 Championships, and won the Australasian u17 Championships in 2014 and at just 15 years old is one of the fast rising stars of the sport.

Tamara Otene, also from North Harbour is even younger at just 13 years old and has just started secondary school is also through to the quarter-finals in the girls singles. New Zealand provide 3 of the 8 quarter finalists in the girl’s singles.

In the open grades it was an even split of New Zealand and Australia into the quarter finals of the men’s singles, with 4 from each nation progressing to that stage of the tournament last night.

The Australians are totally dominant in the women’s singles though, providing each of the quarter finalists. The doubles and mixed are proving a little more even between the two dominant nations, with Oliver Leydon Davis and Danielle Tahuri leading the way for the Kiwis in the mixed, comfortably winning through to the next round.

Play continues across the weekend leading to finals on Sunday, with Junior Team Championships starting on Monday, all games are played at the North Harbour Badminton Centre, entry is free of charge to spectators.
