There are some that believe modern society is on a downward slope – the advent of technology allowing instant gratification, governments across the world in infinite states of flux, consumerism rampant and the so called “age of entitlement” not so much an age problem but a state of mind. To say that the title of god bows to math's sophomore effort,Brighter Futures is an ironic stab not only at a governing party but life in general is a massive understatement.
After starting the recording process in mid-2012, the band finally settled on working with Nick Roughan (Skeptics) who recorded most of the tracks in 2013, the album ended up taking two years to complete. Recording was punctuated by tours of Australia, New Zealand and China and was finally finished in 2014 after additional sessions with Nick Cunningham and mastering from Donnie Miller at Nowhere Studios (in Brisbane, Australia).
Penned across three years of political and social upheaval, Brighter Futures marks a return of the band's vitriolic nature – the acidity of Martin Phillip's lyrics (as evident by a reworked version of “The Only Good Fnord is a Dead Fnord”) coalesced to the sonically jarring rhythm section of Sam Cussen and Thomas Morrison has crafted a nine track album of frustration, anger and resentment. Against whom? Damn near everyone.
Brighter Futures will be released on LP, CD and Digitally in New Zealand from March 27th2015.
