CHAMBER MUSIC NEW ZEALAND PRESENTS: THE BRODSKY QUARTET
One of the greatest chamber music ensembles of our time, the Brodsky Quartet tours to 10 New Zealand centres in March 2015. Formed in the North English town of Middlesbrough in 1972 when the members were in their early teens, the Brodsky Quartet has developed an expansive repertoire over the past 43 years, including works by Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók – and Shostakovich, for which they are particularly renowned. They are also viewed as one of the stand-out “cross-over” quartets and have collaborated in the past with pop figures as diverse as Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and Björk (performing on her Family Tree project). The Brodsky Quartet’s spirited and virtuosic artistry has ensured them a place at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene and their programme for the New Zealand tour includes works by Purcell, Britten and Beethoven. Since their formation, the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 3000 concerts and released more than 60 recordings. Sharing their energy and craftsmanship with the next generation, they are currently International Fellows of Chamber Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The quartet performs an extra concert in Auckland as part of Auckland Arts Festival 2015.
"The players gave unstintingly of their passion and energies, playing with a spirit so transformational you felt they were actually improving the world." The Strad, October 2012

DANCE

DOUGLAS WRIGHT: THE KISS INSIDE
The Kiss Inside is a kinetic meditation on the search for ecstasy in our human culture. Religion, sex, drugs, extreme physical exertion, sado-masochism and of course dance itself are all explored in this new work by acclaimed New Zealand choreographer and dance laureate Douglas Wright. The first full-length work since Wright’s acclaimed rapt, The Kiss Inside is a succulent work in the surreal dance language for which Wright has become renowned. In it, Wright digs deeply into the workings of the human psyche and lays bare motive and outcome in startling provocative images and exquisite and sometimes frenzied movement. With a soundtrack including classical Sufi music, Patti Smith and J.S Bach, the dance will be performed by five dancers – Sarah Jayne Howard, Tara Soh, Luke Hanna, Craig Bary and Simone Lapka.

CHAMBER MUSIC NEW ZEALND PRESENTS A RESIDENCY: WHAT MAKES COMPOSERS TICK
Ever wondered how a composer puts together their music and what inspires them? Three special day-long workshops give an insight into the creative world of five New Zealand composers. The process of conception to concert performance will be discussed and demonstrated through a series of events and seminars at university music schools in three centres around NZ. Musicians and composers from Chamber Music New Zealand's Composer Connections tour will gather at the residency, answering questions and talking about what it’s like to have a piece of music created for you, and how you begin to create music with a particular ensemble in mind. The residencies begin with a lunchtime concert, followed by afternoon seminars and workshops, with an early evening performance. A detailed programme will be released nearer the event.
