McNee wins final TR86 round at Hampton Downs
Wellington’s Jamie McNee wrapped up the 14/15 Toyota 86 championship with a round win at Hampton Downs at the weekend.
McNee won the first and last rounds of the championship in his Talley’s/Vodafone car, winning more rounds than any other driver. This left him second overall defending his championship win from the previous season.
Unfortunately due to mechanical problems with the car Jamie was unable to perform for the middle three rounds of the championship. Once the problems with the car were repaired, Jamie jumped back to the top of the table.
McNee finished second in the first race of the weekend to eventual championship winner Tom Alexander, then won the second race having started 5th in the reverse grid race.
McNee led 11 laps of the final race before being hit from behind by Alexander and spun, eventually finishing third after Alexander was penalised in a post race enquiry.
‘It was great to have my car performing well again at Hampton Downs on the weekend,” Jamie said. “The racing was very close and intense, but it was cool to come away with the round win.
“I was disappointed not to be able to win the championship again this year, but that's motor racing. Sometimes mechanical issues can produce the result no matter how well you drive.”
21-year-old McNee is now working with sponsors Talleys and Vodafone to identify an endurance racing drive for the coming South and North Island endurance series.
