Tennis Tournament rallies Wellington’s junior talent

Tennis fans and their families are invited to join in the fun at this week’s ActivePost Tennis Hot Shots Tournament on Sunday 8 March 2015 at Wellington’s Renouf Tennis Centre.

Children from Albany to Invercargill are heading into their first tennis tournaments in February and March as a part of the New Zealand Post’s ActivePost Tennis Hot Shots programme.

The Wellington tournament will see children, aged five to 12, play on smaller courts with lighter racquets and low compression balls that make it fun and easy to compete.

Tennis Central Regional Development Manager, Reilly Logue, says this Sunday’s tournament will be the first opportunity for children and coaches from Wellington, the Hutt Valley and the Kapiti Coast to come together in a formal tournament.

“We have more than 30 children between five and 12 years old registered to play. For many children this will be their first time competing and the first chance for coaches at this level to get together as well.

“The ActivePost Tennis Hot Shots Tournament is an opportunity for new players to pick a club, and to find a coach and continue playing,” Reilly Logue said.

New Zealand Post Sponsorship Spokesperson Malcolm Shaw says there will be plenty of opportunity for parents and siblings to get involved off the court as well with a special ActivePost fun zone to keep kids not competing entertained throughout the day.

“ActivePost is about encouraging participation in sport and that extends to parents and siblings as well. Our sponsorship of ActivePost Tennis HotShots is about supporting the whole family to have fun and have a go,” Malcolm Shaw said.

ActivePost Tennis HotShots is the national starter tennis programme for New Zealand children. It runs in schools and clubs throughout New Zealand and with more than 70,000 kids enrolled this summer it is already a hit with kids.
