Jazz Festival and CSO band together for Christchurch

Jazz Festival and CSO band together for Christchurch

The Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) are banding together to bring James Morrison to the city next month.

The special show at Horncastle Arena on Saturday 11 April is tipped to be the jazz highlight of the year, with the CSO accompanying the talented musician on an A to Z of jazz history.

Joining them on stage is Melbourne-based vocalist Hetty Kate, a rising star on the international jazz scene.

Gretchen La Roche, CSO chief executive says the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is delighted to be, once again, collaborating with the Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival in bringing Australian virtuoso James Morrison to South Island audiences.

“It’s always great to come together to preserve and grow the vibrancy of Christchurch’s cultural scene and we are very proud to be a part of it,” she says.

Other highlights of this year’s Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival include:

One of the world’s most renowned guitarists Hank Marvin, who has achieved legendary status since his early days with The Shadows through to his forays into rock ’n roll, swing and gypsy jazz. His quartet, Hank Marvin Gypsy Jazz features virtuoso accordionist Nunzio Mondai, stand-out rhythm guitarist Gary Taylor and guest bassist, Robbie Pisano. Their debut album, Django’s Castle is flying high in the USA Jazz charts.

Saxophinist Nathan Haines, who is returning to Christchurch with a six-piece band, following the release of his successful new album 5 A Day.

Expect to hear more electronica meets soul, and dance-oriented beats based tunes inspired by his return to London this year when Nathan Haines and his band play at the Transisitonal Cathedral on 9 April.

Irish singer Mary Coughlan, a Christchurch favourite, has also chosen the Transitional Cathedral to debut her new album ‘Alchemists Gold’.

For her first time in New Zealand, multi-talented singer and songwriter Fantine is performing several shows at the festival. Now based in Miami, Fantine Pritoula is quickly becoming an international star. Her acclaimed album ‘I am Fantine’ was produced by Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

The Troubles are one of New Zealand’s most engaging and exciting jazz bands. Led by John Rae, a drummer and composer hailing from Edinburgh, their distinctive sound comes from a mix of string quartet and jazz trio. During 2014 the band performed to sell-out crowds at the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival.
