Call for Proposals - 2016 Circa Programme
Call for Proposals - 2016 Circa Programme
Circa
Theatre is calling for proposals for its 2016 season.
Circa’s programme is the life-blood of the theatre. The
Circa Council, the governing body of Circa Theatre, is
responsible for all programming decisions and Council
members read a large number of plays each year in order to
settle on a diverse range of theatre productions for each
season.
Andrew Foster, Circa Council Coordinator,
says “2015 has seen our biggest season ever at Circa, with
30 productions taking place. There’s a real sense of
clarity of curatorial vision at Circa, and it’s being
rewarded by a great public response to our programming
decisions. We have just received an honourable mention in
the New Zealand Fringe Awards’ Risky Business Award for Wake Up Tomorrow, which received six
awards at the Fringe Awards, including Best in Fringe.
We’re hoping to wow with one of our biggest musical
productions, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, opening in
March; and to appeal to the darker sides of story-telling by
bringing Broadway Star Angelica Page to perform two
one-woman shows, Edge and Turning Page, in June.”
2016 is Circa Theatre’s 40th Anniversary and Circa wants to make it a year to remember. “We are approaching our 40th Anniversary Season with a continued ambitious outlook, and welcome all submissions from established professional theatre directors for the 2016 Circa Theatre programme. We want Circa to continue to be home and host to New Zealand’s most influential theatre-makers.”
Circa has two theatres; Circa One is the larger theatre with 226 seats, which will be upgraded this July, and Circa Two is the smaller space with 100 seats.
The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2016 programme is Monday, 11 May 2015. Foster says “we read plays on an ongoing basis, so submissions sent in earlier than the deadline will have more time for consideration. We encourage you to get your submission in early!”
One of Circa’s main aims is to offer ongoing professional opportunities for theatre practitioners. Most productions at Circa are produced as a Single Venture Partnership (SVP), with the theatre practitioners involved in the production signing up to share the risk and rewards for their show. Circa provides a high level of administrative and technical support for each show, and some funding may be available from the Theatre Artists Charitable Trust (TACT) for financial assistance during the rehearsal period.
How to apply:
If you feel that you have a project that would suit production at Circa, please email your details (CV or short bio) and a copy of the script you propose to circaadmin@circa.co.nz. Please indicate whether you would prefer it to be considered for Circa One or Circa Two and if you have specific dates in mind.
If Circa is interested in your proposal they may invite you to pitch at a Pitch Presentation Day. This year the pitch day is scheduled to take place at Circa Theatre on Saturday 6 June 2015.
