Saturday 21 March 2015: On the 17th March 1860, the first shots were fired in Whaitara that began The New Zealand Landwars, when British troops attacked Te Atiawa chief Te Rangitaake at his pa Te Kohia. Te Rangitaake known also as Wiremu Kingi and his people were resisting the sale of the Pekapeka land block.

The descendants of Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi have met every month since, on the 18th and 19th to remember this event, they continue to practise passive resistance while discussing key issues the people of Parihaka and Taranaki whanui face today. The outbreak of this war and ensuing confiscations is remembered in the waiata tawhito Te Ra o Maehe which Ruakere Hond kindly talks about with Eruera Morgan on Korero Mai Ki Ahau this week.

Sunday 22 March 2015: Dame Tariana Turia has been honoured by the American Cancer Society with the Luther L Terry Award for Exemplary Leadership in Tobacco control at an international conference in Abu Dhabi.

In her tireless pursuit of a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025 Dame Tariana was instrumental in leading a number of legislation changes including increased tobacco tax excises, the banning of retail displays and lowering the amount of duty free allowance for cigarettes.
