Series Champs Decided in Masterton

It was quality over quantity on the opening day of competition at the Equestrian Sports New Zealand Jumping Series Grand Final Show in Masterton today.

Jump-offs over the Heather McDonald-designed courses throughout the series were tight and very exciting.

The two-round Country TV Horse Grand Prix class saw four top female showjumpers go head-to-head in a north south derby. Rose Alfeld (Canterbury) on My Super Nova, Lisa Cubitt (Cambridge) on Bates Amaretto MVNZ, Olivia Robertson (Christchurch) on Ngahiwi Cisco and Claire Wilson (Waipukurau) on McMillan's Tipsey all come through with double clear rounds to the jump-off in the final.
While only Wilson and Robertson had any chance of winning the series, no-one was giving an inch as they chased final honours.

Alfeld was out first and while she nudged the odd rail, left everything up in 43.90 seconds. Newly-crowned Lady Rider of the Year Cubitt wasn't wasting any time as she flew around the track, but a rail at the double saw her finish with four faults in 41.15.

Young Rider of the Year Robertson also gave it her all, but came up slightly short with her clear round in 44.65.

Wilson and Tipsey were clear in 44.93 with their gallant effort, and while the day belonged to Alfeld, the series went to Claudia Hay (Mosgiel) and Euro Sport Centavos, who just last weekend also won the prestigious Bostock International Olympic Cup.

Taking other series honours today were Samantha Morrison (Tauranga) and Biarritz who won both the final and the Main-Events.com University Series.
Georgia Massie (Dannevirke) and Double J Cloud 9 also took the double in the Teleford Junior Rider, while Natasha Mazey (Pukerua Bay) aboard Kabo Lunar took out the Caledonian Amateur Rider Series, despite not making the grand final jump-off, and Brooke Zander (Waipukurau) held on to the Pro-Amateur Rider Series.

The competition continues tomorrow with the rest of the series classes decided, and a gala prize giving dinner to mark the end of the season.
The showgrounds in Masterton are in pristine condition for the Trust House Glistening Waters Show Jumping Championships, with the footing near-perfect underfoot.
