Question One.
State Highway One has many special parts for the many New Zealanders who love to travel and surprising scenic splendour for the international tourists. What parts of State Highway 1 do you recommend people explore again if they are keen to see something really special?
For me as a photographer the most spectacular stretches of SHW 1 are around the coastal town of Kaikoura, the Desert Road across the Central Plateau and the Far North near Cape Reinga. My advice is to take your time, enjoy the journey and stop and explore little places like "Herbert" and "Waikouait." You will be surprised.
Question Two
Driver Jim Harris looks like he would have a story or two. Did he share one with you?
Like all drivers he was in a great hurry and could not wait until his truck was filled up with diesel. No time for great stories here. Jim must be good in what he is doing because he has been driving truck and trailers for 25 years and never had an accident.
Question Three
Fleur Sullivan radiates a life well lived. What did you learn about her legendary restaurant, cafe and bar?
I was lucky to catch Fleur for a few minutes to take some photographs. I only had a coffee there and a chat to one of her chefs. Her legendary place is well documented on her website.

View from the Road: Exploring New Zealand from State Highway 1
At 2047 kilometres long and stretching from the southernmost tip of the South Island to Cape Reinga, State Highway 1 links this country's five main cities, and countless towns and blink-of-an-eye settlements in between. It's also the perfect route from which to explore this country's geographical diversity, traversing expansive plains and a so-called desert, meandering around rugged coastlines, crossing rivers and harbours, and skirting the country's largest lake.
In View from the Road, photographer Arno Gasteiger travels from Bluff to the Far North capturing the people, places and landmarks to be discovered along New Zealand's most important highway, while Kennedy Warne reflects on the organic evolution and quirks of this often travelled, but perhaps little known, stretch of road.
