Studio One Toi Tū Open Nights


Integrating arts and culture with a broad range of inclusive, dynamic activities and events, Studio One Toi Tū is a space for creative Auckland. A historic hub in the heart of Ponsonby, it is a place to create, make, connect and engage with the arts.

The 2015 Autumn/Winter programme hosts a series of spectacular Open Nights at Studio One Toi Tū. Each month, from 5.30-6.30pm, a unique conversational presentation will be delivered by a prominent Auckland creative. These free, connective events offer a glimpse into the minds and processes of some of Auckland’s most dynamic talent; with the opportunity to mingle with light refreshments following the presentation. The evenings are open to all, so get down to Studio One Toi Tū and prepare to be inspired.

The Open Nights series kicks off on Wednesday 13 May brings editor and writer Kirsten Matthew to Studio One Toi Tū. Currently editor of Urbis magazine, Kirsten has a long history in investigative journalism, as well as working for a decade in New York writing for such publications as The New York Times, New York Post, Marie Claire and more. She’s written about everything from murder trials to meat pies, and loves to explore what makes people tick. This is a rare chance to pick the brain of one of New Zealand’s leading journalists.

On Wednesday 10 June the Open Nights series has is a special presentation from photographer Joseph Michael. Working across the spectrum in film, television, documentaries and fine art, Joe is lauded worldwide for his time-lapse photography. He recently travelled to Antarctica to create 360-degree immersive experiences using Hyperlapse (moving time-lapse) and ultra high resolution visual effects (VFX) panels, as well as aerial and underwater filming. The expedition will culminate in an international multimedia art installation.

Studio One Toi Tū Open Nights presents an inspirational conversation with Sarah Longbottom on Wednesday 8 July. Sarah is founder and Creative Director of the Nga Rangatahi Toa Creative Arts Initiative, an award winning arts-mentoring programme dedicated to providing transformational life experiences for rangatahi (youth) outside of mainstream education. Connecting young people with Auckland’s top creative talent, programmes include one-to-one visual arts and theatre mentoring, visual arts, drama and music classes, and transition creative arts. More recently Sarah’s been working on a cultural exchange program between Nga Rangatahi Toa and sister organisations in the Bronx and Brooklyn, New York.
