Exhibition Breathing New Life into Galleria Space

Exhibition Breathing New Life into Galleria Space

Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) is opening a new art exhibition in its revamped Civic Centre Galleria this week.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick will officially open the ‘Large vs Small’ exhibition on Friday evening (5pm 24 April).

Large vs Small’ aims to contrast the large scale with the delicate, and will feature works of five local artists, Debbie Thyne, Martyn Evans, Kristina Joyce, Bridget Thornton and Sarah Zeissen.

The art show comes hot on the success of the inaugural exhibition in the council Galleria. The venue was specially revamped to allow the showcasing of works by local artists.

Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) community arts advisor, Marc Spijkerbosch, said he had received positive feedback from artists who see it as an excellent “opportunity to exhibit work in an impressive and revered space.”

“The Galleria provides a wonderful connection for the arts and wider community to our Civic Centre - breathing new life into this once austere space and showcasing formidable local talent,” he said.

“We have a number of very engaging and relevant pieces in the new exhibition, including poignant sculpture, captivating video, and the strength and presence of gestural painting. I’d encourage local people to come and check it out for themselves.”

The ‘Large vs Small’ exhibition runs until 17 July, with some of the works available for purchase.

Local artists interested in exhibiting in the Galleria in the future are encouraged to add their names to Rotorua Lakes Council’s Creative Communities database. Artists and others interested in the arts can register via the ‘creative email sign-up’ on the council’s Facebook page.
