War Affair (NZ) Gallant in Singapore Return

War Affair (NZ) Gallant in Singapore Return

Star kiwi galloper War Affair (NZ) (O’Reilly) made a gallant return to the turf with victory in the Sgp-1 S$500,000 Lion City Cup (1200m) in Singapore on Sunday.

Singapore’s Horse of the Year, War Affair has produced outstanding form to date, winning 12 of his 17 starts. Nine of his victories have been in stakes company, including four at Sgp-1 level. Trained by Alwin Tan, his last start saw him finish fifth carrying topweight in the Sgp-1 Singapore Gold Cup in November.

“I was very worried at the 600m, he hadn’t closed up with the rest yet,” said Tan. “I could only pray hard he could still run on in the last 400m. The jockey rode him very well and followed my instructions.

“Petrenui ensured a good pace to the race. I was worried horses like Faultess would lead then drop the speed. War Affair needed a fast pace to have the best chance of winning."

A son of Zabeel, Leebaz, which is Zabeel spelt backwards, is the fourth New Zealand-bred horse to win the Gold Coast’s most prestigious black-type race in the last six years, following in the footsteps of Lights of Heaven (NZ) (Zabeel) who won the 2013 edition, Shez Sinsational (NZ) (Ekraar) in 2012 and Metal Bender(NZ) (Danasinga) in 2010.

Finishing second at his last start, Leebaz, trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, has won seven races from his 17 start and has been runner-up in four races, including in last season’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.

“Everything went according to plan,” commented Michael Hawkes. “He had the blinkers on for the first time and (Jim) Byrne rode him well – we got the job done."

Trained by Paul and Kris Shailer, Lady Le Fay showed she is capable on all racing surfaces with Saturday’svictory coming on a heavy track after winning her last start, three weeks ago, on a good track at Te Aroha.

“We were thrilled to bits with the win,” commented co-trainer Paul Shailer. “It was a plan we had in place from when she came back from the paddock, a two-race target, and we were lucky enough to win them both. Now she has black-type in her pedigree, her residual value has gone up.

“We have achieved what we wanted to achieve, which is good when a plan comes together."
