Women Brew with Hundreds of Others Around the World

Wellington Women Brew with Hundreds of Others Around the World

A group of Wellington women known as the “Beerded Ladies” has joined about 200 other women brewers around the world - from as far as Anchorage, Alaska and Arlandastad, Sweden - to brew a beer to celebrate International Women’s Day.

With a recipe created by head brewer Denise Garland, a Red Ale – Unite Under a Bloody Crescent Moon – was produced. And, 90 litres are being released to the public at Little Beer Quarter this Thursday 30 April, at 6pm. Did you know, beer needs time to condition after it is brewed?

“Unite” represents the connection with all the women brewers around the world who brewed as part of the International Women’s Collaboration Brew day. Brewers were all given a beer colour, alcohol percentage and a level of bitterness to achieve in their beer, along with a specific hop to use. Hops are a flower that give beer bitterness and aroma. Willamette hops were chosen to give the beer an aroma of flowers, fruit, earth and spice. It has a strong dark fruit character with caramel notes.

“Under a Bloody Crescent Moon” comes from the poetic words of Sylvia Plath; penned while enjoying a beer. They highlight that beer is a beverage that all can enjoy; both women and men. It is a little known fact that brewers were once largely women, before the practice of brewing was industrialised. Some of New Zealand best known breweries still have women brewers.

Sales of the beer will support the Pink Boots Society; established to empower women beer professionals to advance their careers in the beer industry through education. They will also support beer education and appreciation for Wellington women through the Beerded Ladies.

The brew day was held at The Occasional Brewer. Using their facilities provided the opportunity to brew on top-of-the line, New Zealand made brewing equipment.

Support was also provided by Craft Beer College, Gladfield Malts, Kegco and Wellington’s Baylands Brewery. It was a demonstration of craft beer industry suppliers and producers showing support for an inclusive community where all participants are supported and valued for their contribution
