Mother Courage at Alberton

Mother Courage at Alberton

Alberton will host two performances of an anti-war classic on May 6 and 7.

Mt Albert Grammar School’s Year 13 drama class students will perform Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children at the Mt Albert historic property cared for by Heritage New Zealand.

This will be the students’ first time performing at Alberton – and their choice of play is particularly appropriate given the 100th anniversary commemorations of Gallipoli and both World Wars.

Mother Courage was one of a series of plays written by Brecht in an attempt to counter the rise of Fascism and Nazism,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.

“The play was written in response to the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 and tells the story of Anna Fierling, a single parent and entrepreneur, and her struggle to survive and keep her business afloat and her children safe against a backdrop of a war-torn country.”

The play also contains strong messages about profiteering from war.

Performances take place at Alberton on May 6 and 7 at 7pm. Admission: Adults - $15; students - $10. Bookings essential through iticket (www.iticket.co.nz)
