Museum of Wellington City and Sea Marks New Zealand Music Month

Local musicians are converging upon Museum of Wellington City & Sea this May as we celebrate New Zealand Music Month. Three special events at the Museum will celebrate some of our established musicians, whilst also turning the spotlight on three of our up-and-coming singer songwriters.

The Museum’s musical celebrations kick off at 2pm on Sunday 17 May with Dirty Mike and the Boiz. The show – which will be their first of 2015 –showcases the group’s diverse jazz sound.

Dirty Mike and the Boiz has been an established jazz band for the past six years, and is comprised of established musicians from across New Zealand – Cory Champion (of Electric Wire Hustle) on drums, Alexis French (Richter City Rebels) on trumpet, Scott Maynard (Myele Manzanza Trio) on the upright bass, with Mike Isaacs (previously WJO) on tenor saxophone, and James Paul (big band 3 NZSM) on guitar.

Dirty Mike and the Boiz band member Alexis French says; “After a creative hiatus, we’re amped to be back and performing at Museum of Wellington City and Sea – we’ve got something really special planned for our show”.

On Sunday 24 May at 2pm Museum of Wellington City & Sea hosts All Jazzed Up, a performance devised especially for NZ Music Month by critically acclaimed drummer, Myele Manzanza and fellow Wellington musicians Scott Maynard (double bass) and Dan Hayles (keys).

All Jazzed Up will see this talented trio delve into NZ’s rich and diverse musical repertoire and rework some of their favourite NZ music in their own jazz style.

“It has been fun translating some of our favourite NZ songs, including some classics, into a jazz trio format. Shihad, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Lorde among others will feature and it will be interesting to see if the audience can pick them! We are looking forward to celebrating NZ Music this month with this special show.” says Myele Manzanza.

Myele, Scott and Dan are all graduates of the NZ School of Music Jazz Performance Degree and regularly perform together internationally as the Myele Manzanza Trio. Myele’s modern, fresh approach has taken him around the world, with a recent performance in Los Angeles selected as a concert of the week by LA Weekly.

May’s Third Thursday event on Thursday 21 May will turn the spotlight on Wellington’s young musical talent with a traditional songwriter circle. Featuring three young Wellington songwriters, the evening event will showcase their music, allowing each to talk about their processes, style and work, culminating with some spontaneous musical collaboration.

All shows are in the Test Studio at Museum of Wellington City & Sea, and entry to each show is by koha.
