U-20 Football Teams Head Out into the Community

12 MAY 2015

For Immediate Release

Members of two of the U-20 international football teams in Hamilton for the Five Nations Series will take a break from training over the next couple of days (May 12th and 13th) to meet a few of the locals.

Hamilton’s Waikato Stadium is the venue for several matches in the Five Nations Series, which involves New Zealand, Panama, Ghana, Qatar and Australia. In Sunday’s matches Panama defeated Australia, and Qatar beat New Zealand. There are two matches at Waikato Stadium on Wednesday, with Qatar to face Panama (1pm) and Ghana to meet Australia (4pm).

Sean Murray, Hamilton City Council’s General Manager of Events and Economic Development, says Qatar and Panama team members will head out into the region’s communities today.

“The Qatar team will visit Peachgrove Intermediate School on Tuesday, enjoying a welcome by the kapa haka group, before they meet the students for autographs, photos, a question and answer panel and a short skills session,” Mr Murray says. The Qatar team were due to visit Berkley Normal Middle School on Wednesday (May 13th), but have now arranged for 90 students to be transported by bus to the Waikato Stadium, to watch them face off against Panama, before conducting a skills session with the kids.

Panama will head north to Ngaruawahia on Tuesday (12th May), where members of the team and management will work through a skills session with children from local schools at Centennial Park, from 2.30pm.

“For the Panama players and management, this is a nice opportunity for them to pass on some of their knowledge and experience to a group of young players,” Mr Murray says.
