Multimedia music ensemble co.sonance will commemorate the death of Robert Falcon Scott and his men on May 30th at the Inkbox Theatre Oamaru Opera House with ‘The Ice Suite’ a non-narrative music and image performance experience of Scott’s doomed exploration of the Antarctic.
The Ice Suite is a cutting edge mix of computer generated digital music and imagery interacting with analogue electric viola and acoustic classical violin.
Co-sonance performances
are an amalgamation of programmed composition and images
with spontaneous improvisation between sound and image. The
musicians respond both to each other and the visual mix, and
the visual mix is produced in response to the music. While
some aspects of both musical and visual scores are
pre-composed and pre-arranged, the work relies on the
improvisatory capacities of the musicians and the live video
artist to ensure that every performance is unique.
The
line–up of co-sonance is an intriguing combination of
digital and analogue composers. On the digital side is a
music producer who uses samples and loops to create sound
tracks for Hollywood movie trailers, and a visual artist who
combines nightclub VJ techniques to create non-linear
stories to experimental sound scapes. On the analogue side
is a classically trained violinist who plays a high tech
carbon fibre violin through a rock guitarist’s set of FX
pedals, and a much sought after session master of the five
string viola.
Audiences of all ages and musical tastes find the complexity of the arrangements and the interplay between live and programmed sound and live digital visual mix, absorbing, immersive and entertaining and an unforgettable aesthetic experience.
