Juniors to enjoy Super Session with Highlanders
Juniors to enjoy Super Session with Highlanders
Simultaneous super sessions with the Highlanders for
rugby union juniors will get underway on June 5 around three
regions; Central Otago, South Otago and Southland.
Initiated by Stirling Sports, U13s have been invited to coaching sessions run by players of the 2015 Highlanders squad.
The Supersessions came about after Stirling Sports in Balclutha, Cromwell, Dunedin and Gore had collaborated to become sponsors of The Highlanders for their 2015 Super 15 season.
Part of their sponsorship was access to have The Highlanders visit each store, “however we saw this as a massive opportunity to give back to our community” said Vikki Dardis, co-owner of Cromwell Stirling Sports.
“We have been blown away, by not only the talent of our young players but the dedication of parents who stand on the side line week in week out, be it raining, freezing or the sun is out.
“So this is a brilliant way to get involved at a community level, encouraging and inspiring the young players and helping them learning some new skills from the experts.
“I know the Highlanders enjoy getting back to grass root level and giving back to the younger players too,” said Ms Dardis.
Each Stirling Sports store issued special invites to U13 players through their local junior rugby union clubs. Stirling Sports Cromwell alone has over a hundred U13 players attending in their region from Queenstown, Alexandra, Upper Clutha, Maniototo and Cromwell.
The Stirling Sports Super Sessions will run at 3.30pm in each region, taking place at local rugby grounds. Four Highlanders players will attend each super session, where they will run the junior players through an hour of skills and drills training.
Highlanders Commercial Manager Mike Kerr said, “It’s fantastic to have commercial partners who look not only to benefit from alignment with our team, and the Investec Super Rugby Competition but to create opportunities for us (the Highlanders) to engage with rugby kids throughout the Highlanders area”
Each junior player will receive a Stirling Sports / Highlanders silicon wrist band as a memento of their training session and spot prizes will be given out to teams, who are being asked to attend in their playing uniform.
