Kiwi kids encouraged to nominate their ‘good sort of sport’
Young Kiwi kids will get an opportunity to
give back to the volunteers who make sport happen, with the
AA Insurance ‘good sorts of sport’ competition.
AA Insurance is working with Henry Perenara, former Warriors player and now NRL referee, to kick off a campaign to celebrate sports volunteers all around New Zealand. It honours those people who coach the teams, cut up the oranges, drive kids to games, and do everything else that keeps sport running across New Zealand.
Henry says volunteers are hugely important to sport in New Zealand and credits a lot of his own success to his first coach, John Cargill, from the New Lynn Stags rugby league club.
“John is an amazing guy. He was a volunteer coach and he worked so hard for us. He used to pick me up every day for practice. Guys like John are the people that make stuff happen in clubs, none of the games and the practices would run without people like him organising it all.”
“Sports volunteering is a crucial social and community service,” says Amelia Macandrew, Customer Relations Manager, of AA Insurance.
“Grassroots sports in our schools and clubs wouldn’t be possible without sports volunteers all around New Zealand. According to Sport New Zealand, about 750,000 sports volunteers give over 50 million hours a year!
“With this in mind we wanted to find a way to give back to all those volunteers and celebrate their dedication, time and effort. If you know someone that needs a thank you, you can nominate them by going online and telling us what they do to help out you or your team.”
About the ‘good sorts of sport’ competition:
This is the second year that AA Insurance has been a proud supporter of the NRL referees in New Zealand. Recognising that it’s not just the referees who need support, AA Insurance is running a competition that puts the spotlight on all the sports volunteers around New Zealand. Entries to the competition open on Wednesday 10 June, 2015. To enter, go to aainsurance.co.nz and say why your coach, ref, or the mum that provides the oranges deserves to win the ‘good sorts of sport’ competition.
