Local Zumba Fitness Community dance for Nepal
When the earthquake of 25 April 2015 hit Nepal and images of the widespread devastation began to be broadcasted on news networks and through social media the decision to hold a Zumba Fitness fundraiser in support of the country and its people was an easy one. Marnie Reinfelds, Zumba Fitness Instructor with Zumba Fitness InMotion recalls contacting her fellow instructors to gauge their support and once that was secured the rest fell into place.
Reinfelds highlights “the hardest thing has actually been to make a decision about which charity to support. With so many reputable organisations doing such important and necessary work in Nepal, there was a lot to consider. We had some discussions as a Zumba instructor community, but ultimately the ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ sentiment shone through.”
Zumba Fitness instructor Ange Day agrees. “In a sense we are a global village and as mothers if such devastation hit our community we’d want to know our global village would be there to support our children. Zumba is a great way for people to come together to share a love of music and dance. It has also been a wonderful way in which we can rally together and spread our support further afield.”
The 90 minute Zumba Fitness fundraiser class is to be held on Sunday 21 June 2015, starting 4pm at Vogeltown School Hall, New Plymouth. Entry is by donation and all proceeds will be going to UNICEF’s Nepal Earthquake appeal. There are an estimated 1.7 million children who are still suffering from the outfall of the earthquake. Children are still in dire need in Nepal, there are many particularly in remote parts of Nepal who are struggling to access basic necessities in life like health care, food and permanent shelter.
Day has said support for the event has been heart-warming. “We have a number of instructors who have given up their Sunday afternoon for the fundraiser. The response through social media has been great. We are hoping for a great turn out and that people will give generously.”
