John Marshall QC, CNZM

Prominent lawyer John Marshall, QC, CNZM died peacefully and surrounded by family at his Wellington home this morning (Sunday, 14 June 2015) after being diagnosed with a brain tumour 11 months ago. Mr Marshall was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the recent Queen’s Birthday honours list for his services to the law, and he had retired in March this year as Chief Commissioner of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission after a five-year term. A highly regarded litigator who also specialised in arbitration and mediation, Mr Marshall was a former president of the New Zealand Law Society. He had also convened the Book of Order and Judicial Reference Group of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, and chaired the Wellington College Foundation. Mr Marshall, who was 68 years old, is survived by his wife, Mary, their three children, John, Annabel and Clementine, and granddaughter Rose.
